My laptop screen is no longer 'Dark' ... I do not see anything! Any ideas?

I have an IBM Thinkpad about at 4 years old, works fine, it closed this morning to sleep during the winter and when I open it again this afternoon, the screen is black. I turned it off, then on again and can only make the 'Intel Inside'logo' in the darkness ... then went and nothing else. computer seems to start up ok ... makes all the right noises, but with a black screen or superdark ... I can not make anything out: (I tried fixing the difference but nothing. I'm not sure if it is broken or if I do something stupid like change a reset function or something ... but I can not see! Any ideas are appreciated! (Writing from another computer;) thanks guys! yeah i think it must have been the backlight ... I see the whole eBay thing DIY: s Ponce! you are a life saver! I hooked up my computer to another monitor and problem solved for the time being ... I'm cool with my Comp as a 'Juke-box' for a festival this weekend! phew:)

You can see the screen on startup? First, restart the computer and press F8 as it starts up and you'll get come with the options you want to star in ho laptop. Select Start in VGA mode (or something close to that). This will only work if the monitor setting is high. If not This function may mean that your monitor has gone out. Try plugging an external monitor to see if that works. If not it will eliminate the video card as the culprit. These are what I'd try first.
